COMMERCIAL BUILDING FIRE IN THE BOROUGH

January 15, 2010.  At 15:44 hours units from Waynesboro along with assistance

from Mont Alto, Leitersburg, Blue Ridge, and New Franklin were dispatched to

a reported vehicles on fire inside a commercial building.  Tower 2 along with

Engine 2-1 arrived at 100 East Sixth Street to find several vehicles on fire along

with recycled materials inside Tri-State Recycling.  Suppression crews started an

interior attack while Tower 2 started ventilation.  Truck 17 also assisted with

ventilation.  After knocking down the bulk of the fire, crews discovered

magnesium metals also on fire and requested dry chemical extinguishers.  A

crash foam truck from Raven Rock was requested to cover the recycled

materials and vehicles with foam.  Transfer units from Smithsburg, Long

Meadow, and Fountaindale stood by for Waynesboro at the South Potomac

Street Station.  All units were cleared by 17:38 hours.  An employee who was

using a saw accidentally set materials on fire to start the blaze.  No employees

TOTAL LOSS ON BARN FIRE

December 29, 2009.  Heavy winds and cold temperatures hampered firefighters

while trying to save a barn from flames at 11:25 hours at 6374 Nunnery Road.

Company 2 units arrived on scene to find a fully involved barn with exposures

of a garage and house.  The 60' X 80' one hundred year old barn was beyond

saving and crews concentrated on protecting exposures.  Units from Mont Alto,

New Franklin, Blue Ridge Fire & Rescue, Greencastle, Leitersburg,

Fountaindale, Friendship, and Marion assisted with the Quincy Township barn

located next to Paul's Country Market.  Water was shuttled from a hydrant on

Wayne Highway and a draft site was set up from the creek across Wayne

Highway.  The barn and contents which included a tractor, brush hog, hay,

about 50 chickens and a goat who was soon to deliver were lost.  The nearby

garage sustained minor damage along with a John Deere mower that was stored

inside.  A shed containing bee hives was saved and the hives were relocated to

another location.  Vinyl siding on the house melted along with several windows

that cracked from the radiant heat.  Transfer units from Washington County

included Long Meadow, Smithsburg, and Halfway.  The last units cleared at

14:20 hours.

of a duplex at 34 Cleveland a second alarm assignment was requested.  Tower 2

began fire attack from side alpha of the structure and prepared to ventilate the

roof.  Engine 2-1 had water supply and Engine 2-2 set up a water supply and

attack lines to the rear of the structure.  Crews from Mont Alto, Leitersburg,

Smithsburg, Greencastle, Blue Ridge, New Franklin, Fountaindale, and Air 10

assisted with fire suppression, salvage and overhaul, ventilation, water supply

and supporting services.  Transfer crews from South Mountain, Long Meadow,
